Fantastic Achievements at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships

Fencers from Truro School performed brilliantly in The Commonwealth Fencing Championships 2022, which took place in London from Tuesday 9 to Saturday 20 August 2022.

Four fencers from Truro School represented Wales and England in the competition; Amy (representing Wales), Lexie, Henry and Sam.

They competed alongside five Truro School fencing alumni; Will Deary, Nick Howes, Luke Haynes, Darcy Holdsworth, and Max Cromie, who won several gold, silver and bronze medals between them.

For our students and Truro Fencing Club, it was an impressive event. Amy competed as a U20 fencer, finishing in the top 16.

Lexie finished 3rd in the U17 women’s sabre individual competition and 2nd in the team event.

Henry came 2nd in the U17 men’s sabre individual event and won in the team event.

Sam finished the individual competition in the top 8 and he won a gold medal in the team event too.

Balazs Kurucz, Head Coach of Truro Fencing Club, located at Truro School, tells us how proud he was of the students. “It was quite tough for them because the Commonwealth Games was between seasons, so there was no break. It will be difficult for them to focus on the new season. Fencing is quite mentally taxing and so we usually like to give them some time in between seasons to rest.

“I am very proud of them as a team. I’ve had messages from referees and coaches from the Games that the Truro guys showed great spirit. Even if they lost, they continued to support each other, which is important.”

The new fencing season began last week (running from September to April / May) with the first British ranking competition already done.

“We are trying to qualify as many fencers as possible for major competitions, both European and International,” Balazs continues. “Through good results, we can show that Truro School and Truro Fencing Club is a great place to come and learn, both for education and fencing.”

Balazs hopes to grow the popularity of the sport within the School community too. Fencing is already available as a choice for Wednesday Afternoon Activities, but there is work being done to expand this offering further. “We have a great relationship with the Truro School Sports Department, so we would like to look into offering fencing as an after-school or lunchtime club, probably from next summer.”

In the meantime, if Truro School pupils are interested in finding out more about fencing, they are welcome to come to the Salle located on the Senior School campus. Open from 4 pm every day, visitors are welcome to come in, sit and watch and ask the coaches questions.
