Celebrating International Boarders

Ever wondered what it’s like to be an international boarder at Truro School? Yesterday we invited some of our international boarders to share their stories about life here at Truro School. We are lucky to have boarders from the UK and from a vast range of countries, including Spain, Nigeria, Romania, Thailand, Lithuania, Germany, Hong Kong, South Korea, Ukraine and the Cayman Islands, and so we sat them down and asked them what made them come here and what they most enjoy about life as a boarder in Cornwall.

Many of our boarding pupils cited the wonderfully friendly pastoral support offered by our team of house tutors and the fun and friendships they have established outside of their regular classes. Without exception, they all replied there was so much going on that they rarely have time to get bored.

“Boarding is like having a second home with your friends. During weekends, we usually go on trips to try out new things, such as water sports in summer or ice skating in winter. We’ve also done horse riding, biking, and many other activities.” Cyrus, Hong Kong

“I am currently a prefect in the boarding house, and coming here has added so much to my life. Not only have I made friends from all over the world, but I have seen a lot of Cornwall and have enjoyed new experiences like go-karting. It has been a very positive experience for me.” Ota, Romania

“The school made my transition from South Korea to the UK easy. Truro School has a lovely and peaceful environment, and I’m sure anyone would like it here.” Taerim, S. Korea

Head of Boarding, David McKeown, commented, “Essentially, we are looking to ensure that our boarding facility is a home from home for our boarders, where their wellbeing is truly valued, and a place they will be excited to return to after spending quality time with family during school breaks.”

The Truro School international alumni connections clearly run strong. It was lovely to hear about many second-generation boarders who have come here to study due to their parents and friends also being schooled here. We are proud of our international boarding family and they bring so much to our vibrant school community. We love hearing how international friendships blossom and last well beyond their school years.

We would like to say a big thank you to all the boarders who shared their stories about life here and to Sam Oatey who worked with us on this film project. We look forward to sharing the short videos with you later in the year.
