Cornwall Mining Games

Truro School entered its first ever team into the Cornwall School Mining Games, held at King Edward Mine Museum, Camborne. This annual competition features teams of pupils from schools across the county who competed in six traditional mining disciplines, many of which originated in Cornwall: mucking, mineral processing, hand-steeling, gold panning, swede saw and surveying. Every member of the team demonstrated excellent camaraderie, communication and energy to work incredibly well together on a hot day.

They were delighted to be rewarded with 1st place in the swede saw, 3rd in the gold panning and placed 5th overall out of the 22 teams who participated.

The group commented that they enjoyed the range of activities and the opportunity to learn about Cornish mining heritage and to experience the conditions in which their ancestors would have worked.

A massive thank you to all of the organisers and sponsors of the event for providing this excellent experience for our pupils. Also, to the volunteers for their encouragement and enthusiasm throughout the day. It was particularly wonderful to see Old Truronian, Codi Brooks co20, who (fresh from experience at the International Mining Games in March as part of the Camborne School of Mines team) supervising the event before returning to a work placement in Australia next year.

We will definitely look forward to returning for next year’s competition.
