The Truro School Community came together this week to mark International Women’s Day on the 8th of March. Designed to inspire a world that celebrates diversity, equality and inclusivity, Truro School marked the day with a series of events.
Mrs Richards, Truro School’s Head of Religious Studies, led a series of assemblies in Chapel this week. Members of the Senior Leadership Team were asked to nominate inspirational women from history. Those selected were Mary Tudor, Serena Williams, Jessica Innis Hill, and Malala Yousafzai.
Mrs Richards also talked about the Old Testament book of Esther, one of two books in the bible dedicated to women. These remarkable women have all demonstrated an unwavering commitment to their beliefs, exhibited personal resilience, and conveyed a powerful message urging others to question the information they receive. Their stories serve as a reminder to take the time to understand each other and not always to accept things at face value.
Mrs Richards also hosted a thought-provoking social sciences lecture for KS3 pupils on feminism that looked at the evolution of feminism in developed nations and the move towards acceptance, tolerance and equal opportunity. Mrs Richards challenged pupils to think of ways in which they could support equality in our School Community and ways to help others feel more accepted and supported.
On Friday, Old Truronian, Lottie Millar (CO20) talked to staff and pupils about her journey into medicine and her inspiring thoughts on her work as a woman in a STEM area. Lottie is currently studying Medicine at Exeter University and offered some valuable insights into this field for our Sixth Formers and aspiring medics throughout the Senior School.
Elsewhere, the day has been marked with a show of solidarity and love with the #InspireInclusion pose being shared by pupils and staff across both sites. A reminder that when we value difference, inclusion comes from the heart.
