Year 4 Discovery Day

Over 40 pupils from local Cornish Schools enjoyed a fantastic STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics) Day at Truro School Prep on Saturday 16th March.

The Discovery Day is a new initiative for 2024, forming part of Truro School’s community outreach programme. It provided the opportunity for Year 4 pupils from Cornish schools to experience a range of STEAM subjects including DT, Computing and Coding and Art and Design.

Open to Year 4 pupils from primary schools across Cornwall, the morning was a chance for children with an interest in science, technology, art and design, to engage in a fun and challenging morning with our teaching teams at Prep and to meet others with similar interests.

Gathering at Prep, the children were split into three groups before heading off to a 2-hour activity of their choosing.

The sessions were:

• DT: Robo-craft; designing and building a wooden robot
• Art: Print-tastic Art; experimenting with printing using polyprint, hand rollers and water-based inks
• Computing and Coding; a Micro:bit workshop for young innovators

Tying in with British Science Week, it was an important celebration of STEAM subjects, comprising of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths. These subjects are a vital part of the curriculum and help to promote critical thinking, creativity, decision making and teamwork.

Head of Truro School Prep, Mr Rob Morse said of the day, “We were delighted to be able to welcome so many young people from local schools to enjoy a morning of stimulating STEAM activities.

These subjects will help these pupils to prepare for a future where STEAM skills will be an essential part of our everyday lives. It was a joy to see these pupils grow in confidence as they explored their creative potentials, explored new and exciting challenges and made new friends along the way.”
