Prep Sports Round Up 15.11.24

It has been another exciting, competitive and busy week for sport at Truro School Prep, with action in the pool as well as on the pitch.

Swimmers from Years 3 to 6 took part in two galas this week. On Monday, Truro School Prep welcomed Devoran and Mount Hawke to a Year 3 & 4 swimming gala, which was for many, their first competitive swim. With some fantastic swimming on display, the results were close and came down to the final relays, which carried double points. Well done to our Blue Team for placing 2nd and to our Red Team for placing 4th.

Years 5 & 6 were also in action, with competitive fixtures against Truro High School, Perran-ar-Worthal, Mount Hawke and Devoran schools on Thursday. Once again, it was an extremely close competition and we are delighted to share that Truro School Prep placed 1st overall after some tough heats.

Truro School Prep always looks to offer our pupils sporting experiences that will improve player development. This often sees us looking outside of Cornwall to find suitable competition.

Saturday 9th November was one of these occasions, as we travelled to Queens Taunton for their annual U10s Rugby Festival. The festival gave our players the opportunity to test their skills in six highly competitive games against Plymouth College, Queen’s College, Hazlegrove, Chafyn Grove, Wellington and Taunton RFC.

As with all games at this age group scores were not kept, however, this did not stop the desire to score tries in attack and bring the opposition to the floor in defence. Our players were exceptional ambassadors for the school and highly competitive in what was for many, their first taste of the high-quality rugby played outside of Cornwall. As ever, our thanks to the parents and supporters who made the journey to Queens to watch.

There was more rugby action on Wednesday as Truro School Prep welcomed players for a round-robin TAG Rugby Festival, aimed at increasing participation and giving all children the opportunity to represent their school in competitive fixtures. This saw local primary schools that only play TAG compete against players from Truro Prep who are more confident playing the non-contact version of the sport. As always, player development and enjoyment were the aim of the day and both were clearly on display with children improving their play as the day went on and smiling and enjoying themselves whilst doing so.

In football this week, our U11 footballers took on three strong sides from Archbishop Benson School for some challenging games with plenty of learning opportunities. Despite not coming out on top, our teams held their own in a competitive field and showed some great camaraderie, teamwork and skill.

In hockey, a depleted U11 team faced the challenge of positional changes and rose to the occasion during a triangular fixture with Mount Kelly and Plymouth College on Wednesday 13th November.

With Ellie missing in defence, Eleanor, Cora, Phoebe and Rosalia worked hard in her absence, relishing this opportunity to learn new skills. It was refreshing to see them working together to delay their opposition, closing them down and channelling them towards the sides of the pitch.

Florence played consistently well as goalkeeper, moving forward to meet the ball and clearing it outside of the shooting circle. Tilda and Lissie worked together extremely well in attack, linking the midfield and setting up various shooting opportunities in both games. Also in attack, both Poppy and Tilda used their speed to create angled runs and accelerate with the ball, each scoring goals against Plymouth and Mount Kelly.

Players of the match against Mount Kelly were Lissie and Tilda, for their ability to switch between attack and defence during the game. Lissie was chosen again by Plymouth for her determination shown in chasing down every ball and resetting quickly for free hits.

Well done to all of our teams this week for some superb individual and group efforts. Truro School Prep is proud to offer a diverse range of sports every term and so it is both impressive and wonderful to see our teams still performing so well across the board with courage, confidence and compassion.
