It was an absolute privilege and honour to welcome back one of the School’s most distinguished Old Truronians, Professor Sir John Curtice CO72, for an in conversation with the Head, Mr Andy Johnson on Tuesday evening. The event offered a unique opportunity to hear firsthand from the UK’s leading authority on electoral behaviour, whose in-depth knowledge, and decades of experience in political analysis has shaped public understanding of polling and political attitudes.
Sir John’s conversation with Mr Johnson was both informative and approachable. He offered thoughtful perspectives on the evolution of political sentiment in the UK and USA, backed by compelling anecdotes and examples from his remarkable career, from his early days after leaving Truro School to his longstanding role in television election coverage. He offered impactful advice to young people considering a role in politics and thoughts on how parents and teachers can effectively inform and influence young people to think of politics from early on in their daily lives. His insights into the complexities of modern polling and the public’s shifting attitudes were fascinating, and he conveyed them with clarity and wit.
The setting in the Truro School Chapel added a fitting sense of tradition and pride, reflecting the school’s history and the enduring impact of our Old Truronians. Overall, this was an outstanding event, blending intellectual rigor with the warmth of a homecoming. It was a true privilege to have such an accomplished figure return to share his experiences and wisdom.
A huge thank you to all who came along, and to Sir John for his valuable time.
