Finding ways to connect with our children while creating something can be both rewarding and fun. To help you make the most of the weekend, we’ve put together some simple DIY projects that are perfect for families to enjoy together. These activities don’t require specialist materials or complex instructions, just a bit of time, creativity, and a willingness to make memories together.
Family Memory Jar
What You’ll Need: A jar (or any container), slips of paper, pens, stickers or markers for decoration.
Each family member can take a slip of paper and write down something they loved about their week or a positive moment they experienced. You can also add goals, wishes, or even funny memories. Keep this jar somewhere visible, and over time, you’ll create a collection of special memories. Once it’s full, gather around and read them together.
Family Recipe Book
What You’ll Need: Blank notebook or scrapbook, coloured pens, markers, and family-favourite recipes.
Sit down as a family and gather your favourite recipes; from Grandma’s cake to a parent’s famous pasta. Write them down in a special notebook, adding personal touches like drawings, stories about the recipe, or why it’s a family favourite. Each time you cook together, add more recipes. It’s a wonderful way to build a family keepsake.
DIY Bird Feeder
What You’ll Need: Pinecones, peanut butter or honey, birdseed, and string.
Coat a pinecone with a thin layer of peanut butter or honey, then roll it in birdseed until it’s covered. Tie a string around the top and hang it from a tree in your garden or a nearby park. Watching birds enjoy the feeder can be a delightful daily activity for the family, especially for little ones interested in nature!
Family Handprint Canvas
What You’ll Need: A blank canvas or sturdy piece of paper, non-toxic paint, and a brush.
Each family member dips their hand in paint and makes a handprint on the canvas. Layer the handprints to create a colourful collage of overlapping hands that represents family unity and love. Write your family’s name or the date for a personalised touch. Hang it up as a reminder of your family bond.
Indoor (or Outdoor) Scavenger Hunt
What You’ll Need: A bit of creativity!
Create a list of things to find around the house or in your garden, like “something blue,” “a family photo,” or “a smooth rock.” You can even add clues to make it more challenging. This project encourages teamwork, and children love the thrill of the hunt. Plus, it’s easy to adjust based on age and available space.
Tips for Making the Most of DIY Family Time:
• Turn Off Devices: Try to have everyone put away phones or other devices for distraction-free time together.
• Let Creativity Flow: Don’t worry about perfection and focus on having fun. These projects are meant to bring out everyone’s imagination.
• Share Roles: Give each family member a task, whether it’s gathering supplies, painting, or organising. This way, everyone feels involved.
We hope these DIY ideas help your family spend meaningful time together, creating memories you’ll all treasure. Happy crafting and enjoy these moments with your loved ones!
