Truro School Sixth Form has welcomed three exchange students from Somerset College in South Africa. Thea, Genevive and Oliver have joined the school for the remainder of the Autumn Term as part of an exchange programme with Lower Sixth pupils Finlay, Charlie and Rory.
A warm welcome was exchanged, with the opportunity to make Cornish pasties with Truro School Cookery alongside Alan Rosenthal. This activity suggestion was made by a parent – as our students experienced African cookery during their exchange trip in the summer.
Students have been working with their exchange partner to craft these Cornish delights, along with Cornish fairing biscuits. Alan has given an insightful history of Cornish food, whilst guiding these first-time pasty makers through the process.
The exchange has given students the opportunity to gain new experiences. South African students have been relishing in the opportunities presented to them at Truro School. Genevieve has joined the Leiths Cookery Diploma and is trying geology lessons for the first time. Thea has been studying Psychology and English Literature which are new subject areas for her.
Weekends have been full of exploration, with trips to The Eden Project, St Michaels Mount, Lands End and London enjoyed by all. More Cornish visits are to follow in the approaching weeks as Truro School students have been enjoying showing off their home county.
During July and August, Finlay, Charlie and Rory headed to Somerset College in South Africa for their exchange where they learnt new skills including all three taking Afrikaans lessons. Charlie joined the school Rugby team and studied Business as a new subject area. A highlight of the trip for all, was going on safari, where the group saw rhino, buck, baboons, giraffes, lions and cheetahs.
Staying with their exchange partners family for the duration, all have felt very welcome and like they have made a new family. They have thoroughly enjoyed the programme and are looking forward to the next few weeks of discovery and exploration.
