The 1st Year Poetry in Performance evening was a delightful celebration of the spoken word and the joy of poetry.
This cherished annual tradition highlights the creativity and talent of 1st Year pupils, who have been exploring poetry in their English and Performance lessons. In Form Groups, they brought a wide range of poems to life with clarity and enthusiasm, showcasing pieces from notable poets such as Charles Causley, Hilaire Belloc, John Harris, Lewis Carroll, and Benjamin Zephaniah.
Inspired by the words of poet laureate Ted Hughes – who likened poetry to a living organism with words, rhythms, and images animated by a single spirit – the evening emphasised the power of language to move and inspire.
A special thank you goes to the English Department and Mrs Sanderson for their dedication to nurturing a love of poetry among pupils and making this event a success.
In between Form Group performances, individual winners of the school’s Junior Verse Speaking Competition took to the stage to perform their readings. Congratulations Kit M, Joseph T, Verity, Sophie H, George R and Harry S (in absentia), Ben T, Janice W, Isaac B, Amelie P, Michael L, Yolanda F, Jennifer V, Ottilie L, and Joseph M.
