Prep Sports Round Up 14.03.25

It has been another busy week for sports, with more exciting fixtures still to come.

Peninsula Cross-country successes started the week after 17 talented runners attended the Peninsula cross-country finals, held at Camborne SIA School on Monday, 10th March. This was a hugely competitive event, with over 250 runners from the cluster taking part, covering the Helston, Falmouth, Truro and Redruth areas. Each race featured the top ten qualifiers from their previous rounds to create a competitive and packed starting line.

The course itself was flat, fast and relatively dry, which allowed many of our runners to qualify in the top 20 for the County finals. Congratulations to all of our cross-country runners, who showed real commitment and determination in their races, and in particular to Jack and Mabel (Year 4) and Sienna (Year 5) for winning their respective age groups.

Well done and best of luck for the next round to:
Year 4 – Mabel, Jack, Isabella, Daisy, James, Albie and Edward
Year 5 – Sienna and Evie
Year 6 – Henry

In football, our U9s were in action in the ISFA tournament. The team competed valiantly, playing some great football and improving as a team as the tournament went on. Drawing against Charlestown, losing against St Mewan and winning against Tregolls meant they finished 3rd in their group, so they went into a 5th and 6th playoff against a strong Archbishop Benson side. Producing their best performance of the day, they finished 1-0 winners, taking 5th place overall.

On Thursday, our U11 footballers and netballers welcomed teams from St. Agnes School. With the sun shining, there was some fast-paced play on the netball courts in tightly contested matches, whilst on the football pitches, some of our mixed development teams gained great confidence and improved their skills, all whilst having lots of fun and showing great camaraderie and compassion.

Prior to this fixture, it has been a busy time for our U11 netball teams, with matches on both Wednesday and Thursday last week.

On Wednesday, two teams took to the court for a friendly netball match against Truro High School and Polwhele House School. One of the standout features of the matches was the improvement in the players’ defensive skills. The pupils worked hard on marking their players, and it was evident from the first whistle that they had been practicing their footwork and positioning in training.

The defenders were quick to react, maintaining tight coverage and making it difficult for their opponents to get easy passes or shots. The communication between players also made a significant difference, with teammates supporting each other and calling out for passes, ensuring that everyone was involved and the pressure on the opposition was consistent.

On Thursday, some of the girls had an early start to attend the IAPS U11 Netball tournament at Millfield. The tournament attracts some fierce competition, with schools travelling from all areas of the South and the Midlands to attend.

The nature of 5-a-side netball means that all players need to rotate positions after each half, ensuring that all players play both shooting and defending positions. Whilst this set-up provides players with variety and prevents early specialism in positions, it can reduce the flow of your game as the rhythm is always changing. Despite this, the girls did incredibly well against some very well-drilled teams.

They moved the ball into space and always tried to be the next offer once the pass had been sent. Having lost to the eventual winners in the group stages, we went forward into the Plate Competition and finished in 4th place, a fantastic achievement considering tiredness and difficulty of play. We are extremely proud of them and impressed by their beautiful behaviour, strength of character and camaraderie.
