Speech Day at both the Prep and Senior School is a celebration of all the remarkable achievements from the academic year gone by.
It is a time for parents, pupils, students and staff to come together, to reflect, to commend those who are awarded prizes for sustained attainment and for commitment and effort throughout the year and to prepare our leavers for the next stage in their lives.
Courage was at the heart of proceedings at this year’s Truro School Speech Day. Held in the auspicious surrounds of the Hall for Cornwall, the afternoon began with an introduction from Truro School Chaplain, Helen Byrne, who welcomed esteemed guests, staff, pupils and their families to a “day of celebration and thanks.”
Mrs Liz Garner, Joint Vice Chair of Governors gave a welcome address, thanking all those who contribute to the vibrancy and success of the Truro School Community. Mr Johnson spoke of the courage needed to try something new and the importance of not expecting perfection in everything we do. Rather, we need the courage to embrace our journeys with humility and compassion.
It was with great pleasure that Truro School Prep welcomed British comedian, writer and actress, Helen Lederer to our annual Speech Day and Prize Giving.
The afternoon was opened by Joint Vice Chair of Governors, Mrs Liz Garner, who welcomed parents, staff and pupils before she reflected on Truro School’s Values; Curiosity, Confidence, Compassion, Curiosity and Courage, this year’s value.
She remarked, “Courage comes in many forms… it can be very small but our actions do need a little challenge, perhaps a little fear. This takes bravery; having courage is hard.” She urged our pupils to take courage because, through courageous steps, we can head forward into new adventures, new challenges and new ways of thinking.
As our year of compassion drew to a close, Truro School gathered for the final time at the Hall for Cornwall. Marking the end of another fabulous school year, it was a rousing celebration of the achievements of all our pupils across the school and an opportunity to bid fond farewells to our 2023 leavers.
Staff, pupils and parents were welcomed by the Head of Governors, Richard Thomas, who thanked everyone for their effort and support throughout the year. Mr Johnson then took to the stage to thank all those who have contributed so much, in so many ways, to the thriving community that is Truro School. Our guest speaker, Max Levene, economist and disability awareness campaigner, and Old Truronian (CO10), spoke with humour, poignance and inspiration.
After such a busy and exciting year at Truro School Prep, it was wonderful to come together as a community of staff, pupils and their families to celebrate the hard work, determination and progress made by our amazing children.
With a presentation to Head Gardener Colin Dower, who is retiring after 49 years of service to Truro School, an inspiring speech from Gillian Burke and some outstanding singing from our boy choristers, it was a truly moving event.
A huge well done to all of our prize winners and thanks to everyone involved in making the occasion so memorable.
“Dare to dream, dare to ask and when you are given an opportunity grab it with both hands and make it possible.”
A fantastic finale to the school year took place with the return of the Senior Speech Day where we welcomed pupils, students, staff, family and friends from across our community, nationally and internationally.
Speeches included our Head Girl and Head Boy, our Chair of Governors, Mr Richard Thomas, our Head, Mr Andy Johnson and it was an honour to welcome guest speaker Director, and Old Truronian, James Hawes.
Celebrations, applause and emotions were on the agenda for this year’s Prep Speech Day as we welcomed pupils, family, and friends to celebrate the achievements of another fantastic year. During the afternoon we also said fond farewells to our Year 6, to who we wish every success in their ventures up to Senior School, and to our superb Head of Prep, Sarah Patterson.
“We thank you, we wish you well, and we know that you leave this school both greatly enhanced, and in tremendously safe hands.”
A huge thank you to Sophie Daud, Chair of the Y7 (official youth engagement group for the G7 Leaders’ Summit), for sharing her inspiring and motivating words about the role and impact that young leaders can have in the world.
After a year of uncertainties and changes it was with great pleasure, and some relief, that we were able to welcome prize winners and Upper Sixth students, along with their parents, to celebrate another busy and successful year.
With great pleasure, we welcomed our guest speaker, Mr Chris Lubbe, and our audience of Year 6 pupils and parents, to this morning’s Prep Prize Giving.
An internationally acclaimed inspirational keynote speaker and storyteller, Chris shared his incredible story of resistance against ‘apartheid’, keeping his audience spell-bound as he took them on a journey of discovery.
Chris was joined on the stage by Chair of Governors, Richard Thomas, Truro School Head, Andy Johnson, Head of Prep, Sarah Patterson, Deputy Head of Prep, James Frewer and most importantly, all of our super Prep prize winners.
The Headmaster and Governors are pleased to invite you to join them for Virtual Speech Day
Guest speaker Ros Atkins (CO93), BBC Presenter, Outside Source, BBC World News & BBC World Service.
Speech Day will be available on Friday 3 July 2020, from 10.30am on the the link below.
Prep Speech Day 2020 had a slightly more virtual and socially distanced format this year. Instead of pupils gathered in the Assembly Hall and proud parents watching, the prizes were filmed ready for parents to watch this morning.
Year 6 then made their way outside where they collected their prizes from the table where Ms Patterson directed them to their prize instead of shaking their hands.
Parents, friends and pupils gathered in the Sir Ben Ainslie Sports Centre on Friday 5 July to celebrate all of the remarkable achievements from the academic year.
This year, we welcomed guest speaker and Truro School Alumni, Tim Just, Head of Space at UK Research and Innovation, alongside The Headmaster, Mr Andrew Gordon-Brown and Chairman of Governors, Mr Kim Conchie.
Students from each year group were awarded prizes for sustained attainment and for commitment and effort throughout the year. School prizes were awarded to excellent ambassadors, all of whom demonstrate great commitment and achievement in their fields.
Offshore and ocean sailor Susie Goodall joined our Year 3 to 6 pupils, their families and friends to celebrate the children’s endeavours, aspirations and achievements at this year’s Prep Speech Day.
The Welcome was given by Kim Conchie, Chair of Governors and the Opening Prayer by Andrew Gordon-Brown, Headmaster. Sarah Patterson, Head of Prep, then delivered her reflection on the year gone by before distributing prizes alongside Guest Speaker Susie Goodall, who talked about the importance of embracing new chapters in her inspirational speech. Billy S then expressed the vote of thanks before a final blessing by Reverend Aubin de Gruchy.

Curiosity to always want to discover and learn more, academically and more widely too.
Because we believe that academic excellence is an important part of human excellence. Every child is an individual and we celebrate and develop their uniqueness, helping them to become an independent learner and encouraging each child to explore, understand and cultivate their talent and abilities, whatever they may be.
Compassion to understand and champion the needs of others, in our community and beyond.
Because our mission challenges us to be a vibrant community which enables people to live their lives to the full and transform society for the better. Located in the heart of Cornwall, our distinctive, serene location supports the development of balanced, unpretentious and reflective children who understand their role as global citizens.
Confidence to build resilience by learning from both successes and failures alike.
Because we want every pupil to be comfortable in their own skin, celebrating the uniqueness of each individual in the school community. Through drama, presenting and public speaking opportunities, as well as appearing in productions and concerts, pupils learn key communication skills and gain the confidence to prosper in the real world.
Creativity to be imaginative in how we express ourselves and approach new challenges.
Because we value the development of pupils’ imaginative and creative dimensions as well as their characters. Through a broad curriculum and wide range of co-curricular activities, pupils discover the important balance between creative and logical thinking. These opportunities are fundamental to ensuring your son or daughter discovers their hidden gifts, developing a sense of individuality and a confidence in their own abilities.
Courage to enjoy becoming the very best of who we are, with integrity and ambition.
Because we believe that essential life skills are often best taught outside of the classroom, balancing an academic education. Through a wide-ranging co-curricular programme, we offer every child the chance to participate, perform and lead in the fields of their choice. In a competitive world these opportunities are fundamental to ensuring your son or daughter develops essential life skills and an ambition for life.
