A day in the life of a Vet

1st Years to Upper Sixth were invited to Penmellyn Vet Practice to learn hands on about veterinary medicine.

Students were provided with a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes of a working veterinary practice and hospital which will help inform their decision making about entering a career in this area.

They had tours from two of their vets, one specialising in small animals and the other in equine veterinary medicine.

Sarah Finnegan, Medics, Dentists and Vets Coordinator, said: ‘Students were given the chance to see behind the scenes of one of the best equipped veterinary practices and hospitals in Cornwall. They witnessed small animals being prepped for theatre, a horse coming round from sedation after it’s dental check-up and got to see the only CT scanner at a vet practice in Cornwall. The hands on experience of trying on scrubs, rectal gloves and lead-lined suits enables them to get a feel for what it would be like to work as a vet and the insight provided by the professionals furthered their understanding. It was a unique and inspirational day. The biscuits were rather tasty too’!
