Girls’ Boarding Blog

It was lovely to open the doors and welcome the girls back last Sunday; not least so that I could hand over, with a huge sigh of relief all of the plants that I had been left watering.

Although slightly depleted in number, due to our 5th and Upper Sixth Years having finished assessments and therefore having a slightly prolonged half term break, it was great to have girls back in the house again and to hear what they had got up to during their week ‘off’. One thing that was abundantly clear was that a LOT of revision had been done!

Before I embark on this week’s news I want to quickly share a couple of other photos from the last week of term with you. U6th leaving boarders were pictured on the front terrace on the Thursday before we broke for half term and I was thrilled to receive these photos of Stephanie (and Trennick boarder Jack) completing her A Level Chemistry practical in Kellett School in Hong Kong. It really is impressive that such links were able to be made and for Steph and Jack to be able to complete this integral part of their exam.

This week back has been ‘end of year exam week’ for the Lower Sixth. Malvern has certainly felt very studious. The girls have worked hard, prepared as best they could taking hard exams in their stride and I could not be prouder of them.

The Friday end of day bell could not have been more welcome and the girls headed back to house looking six foot taller! Knowing that they were done was a huge relief and the house had a very happy, if a little tired, vibe about it after supper. With no prep to do the Monopoly board was dug out and Hattie, AJ, Amy and myself thrashed it out in the common room….three hours later and I was the first to be bankrupted with Hattie emerging the winner! Beds then beckoned and the girls settled down for the night looking forward to a morning lie in.

On Saturday, Amy was up and out of the house first with hockey and netball fixtures up at the main school site to contend. Wycliffe College, who were down on tour, were the willing, and very strong opponents, and with the sun beaming down on her Amy enjoyed her morning of sport. With sporting fixtures non-existent so far this term I headed up to support and take the odd photo too.

Just after midday we boarded the mini bus with the Trennick boys and headed to Big Dunks near Wadebridge for an afternoon of paintballing fun! Although a little apprehensive, and quite justly so it transpired, about possible bruises the girls got stuck in and returned buzzing (and hot and sweaty!). Whilst I couldn’t get any action shots I was sure to get a few before they headed out….but can you spot them in all that camo..?

Once back at school it was straight into supper for a steak and/or chicken supper. Tesco was visited for snacks and then we hosted the senior boarder social in Malvern house; it was lovely to have the Trennick boys over for games and snacks; much laughter was heard and the girls went to bed having enjoyed a fun filled day.

On Sunday the sun shone its little heart out making it the hottest day in Cornwall so far this year. With picnics in the park, to sketching on the field, to reading in the Malvern courtyard and sunbathing in the Pentreve garden the girls enjoyed every second. Hattie, Austeja and Mrs Wood sat down together with a large tub of popcorn and watched England win against Croatia in the Euro 2020 football tournament. After a Kath Fried Chicken supper, the girls headed back to the house to start getting ready for the week ahead, all feeling a little tired and sticky from the heat.
With just three and a bit weeks left until the year comes to a close, we have a jammed packed schedule to keep us busy and to ensure that we make up for lost time during lockdown. We will be making the most of the good weather and fitting in mid-week trips out and off campus as well as ensuring our weekends make the most of all that Cornwall has to offer in the Summer.
