Girls’ Boarding Blog

The week begun with some nervous girls awaiting phone calls from the Headmaster on Monday evening. Senior prefects were due to be announced and Malvern had an air of tension after school. The news was all good though and I was delighted to learn that both Katie and Amy were successfully appointed. AJ had awesome news too, and a phone call with the Head to confirm, having been successful in her application to be Malvern’s Head of House, 21/22!

The week has seen a number of out of the normal happenings with Charlotte visiting St Ives with her A Level English group on Monday and Phoebe heading to Newquay Zoo with the Psychologists on Wednesday. On Tuesday evening we headed out as a boarding community to Falmouth and then there was the small matter of Sports Day on Thursday. Friday saw the Upper Sixth attend leavers day, complete with special breakfast, inflatable fun and a formal service followed by a buffet lunch.

On Saturday morning, Amy was up and out early in order to travel to her weekend fencing competition. Stratford was her destination and she left excited to be able to compete once again; there haven’t been many opportunities due to Covid this year. The house was super quiet with just five girls in. Some packing was taken care of, town (for more bubble tea I believe) was visited and the girls generally pottered around. Issy, looking for some more adrenaline action however, jumped at the chance to join Trennick on their Coasteering activity in Newquay. Wetsuit clad, she showed the boys how to do things.

Our Saturday evening social consisted of a BBQ supper and then rounders fun on the fields. Burgers, chicken kebabs, sausages, fresh salads and slaws were all enjoyed and the cornetto ice cream made for the perfect pudding. We then headed up onto the school fields for rounders, with a twist. With most of the boarders having never played before, we spent the first hour playing traditional rules and introducing everyone to the game. There were some great hits, some super speedy running and some impressive diving catches! AJ and Issy held their own with the other boarders and did Malvern proud! The game ended with the boarders experimenting with different types of batting ‘instruments’ a cricket bat, tennis racket and even a hockey stick (well done Issy) were used brilliantly!

When the rain started to spit and threaten a down pour, we headed back inside and it wasn’t long before the Trennick boys migrated down to Malvern for an evening film.

Sunday began very quietly with the girls lying in until brunch. We then headed off with the junior girls to Trevaskis Farm for strawberry picking and a meander. It was great to be off site, even if the weather was awful! The polytunnels were dry and the activity very peaceful….the girls picked their body weight in juicy strawberries to bring home.

The week ahead will see the girls follow their usual timetables for Monday – Wednesday and then the whole school will go off timetable with the lower school taking part in their World Aims days (this years focus is ‘Let Creation Breathe’) whilst the Lower Sixth are set to be involved in an enrichment programme.

Next weekend Mrs Wood and Mr Copeland are planning on taking the seniors Go Karting…a firm boarding activity favourite!

As this will be my last blog of the term, and academic year, it seems fitting to end it reflecting on the year that has past. It seems like only yesterday that the girls pitched up, fresh faced and a little nervous, back in September. This was really brought home to me this week when we made the most of the sunshine and headed to Swanpool and Gylly beach in Falmouth for a few hours…..this was our first trip in September and saw the girls dipping toes, fully swimming and even a weaver fish sting to the hand (Emily!). Great memories of a super group of young ladies!
