A Stunning Win from an Impressive 1st XV Team

It was a beautiful Cornish autumn day as two confident teams met on the home pitch.

The 1st XV Team had been training hard and starting to see the results; they had beaten Plymouth and Mount Kelly in previous rounds, and their game was improving with each match. Wellington is a strong, physical side and had previously beaten Truro School in an early triangular series.

Truro started quickly; receiving the kick-off, they claimed the ball and then attacked from their own 22, throwing it wide and making it to the halfway line. A Wellington penalty followed, and Truro kicked down the pitch. A quick line out and another Wellington penalty went under the posts. Truro took the 3 points and a great start to the game, 3 minutes in.

Wellington then hit back. After dominating territory, a series of successful mauls saw them score in the corner, with the conversion missed and 22 minutes gone. Truro then defended for their lives and managed to keep Wellington at bay.

Always dangerous on the counter and with a dominant set piece, Harvey P scored his second penalty for Truro just before halftime to go in at the break 6-5 up.

The second half was genuinely thrilling. Truro, playing very composed rugby in attack, mowed down anything in a blue and white shirt. They scored two tries in quick succession.

Another dominant scrum gave Harvey P the chance to muscle over the line whilst carrying four Wellington players with him.

Dusting himself down, Harvey then converted his kick to increase the lead to 13-5.

More Truro attacks followed, and after a chip over the top, Wellington mishandled, and man of the moment, Harvey P, was on hand to gobble up the loose ball and score under the posts.

Did he convert it? You already know the answer; the score rocketed to 20-5 in Truro’s favour.

This finally woke Wellington up, and they attacked with a vengeance. Thankfully, Truro had enough in the tank to hold them at bay until late on.

Great hands by Wellington saw them over in the corner, with the try unconverted.

The stand-out performer was Harvey P, who scored all of Truro’s points. However, Fin D, Noa, Jude, Alex S, and indeed, every player on the pitch need mentioning.

Sadly, Fin D suffered a late injury during the match, resulting in a broken ankle. Fin will be missed as a key performer all season, but we are confident he will come back stronger, and we wish him a speedy recovery.

What was truly impressive to witness was the talent, confidence and courage we have seen in these players. A rousing, post-match team talk from Mr Sanderson left the team brimming with pride from being both a part of the 1st XV and Truro School.
