It was lovely to welcome back Old Truronian, Daniel Wormald CO13, today for this week’s Career advice and industry talks session. Daniel has successfully started and built up his own business, Lutra Marine Engineering, in environmentally friendly dredging.
Daniel spoke about how his time at Truro School was invaluable from when he joined the school aged 11 due to the excellent Geology facilities, and the opportunity to study this at GCSE as well as A-level. Daniel first came up with his business idea on a fifth year school trip to Godrevy beach where he wondered if there’d be a sustainable way of dredging tin from the sand without effecting water quality.
“Following completion of A Levels at Truro school in Geology, Chemistry and Physics I took a gap year to establish whether the company was viable. It very quickly became apparent that there was a need for the technology so I founded the company and started the process of building and developing the technology and subsequently patenting the equipment.”
Alongside this, for the first two years of his business Daniel worked as a Theatre Technician, with the skills he’d learnt at The Burrell. This meant he was able to put more money in to the business to get it started.
The pupils were all engaged with Daniel’s story and it was great to see so many of them there, and sharing a passion for the subject.
