14.02.25 Senior Bulletin

Dear Parents, Guardians & Carers,

This is a groundbreaking bulletin. For the first time I can recall, the weekly parental bulletin text has been authored by the Head Student Team. I meet with them every week to discuss how they are doing and how the School is working, for them, and their peers. Their time with me is insightful and invaluable and I am proud to give them this platform.

I wish them, you, and all in our community, a happy and restful half term.

Mr A Johnson.

From the Head Student Team:

The half term after Christmas is very different for each year group. Many of us have had trial exams or have been settling back into different school routines after the nice Christmas break. However, for all of us, this half term has been one of pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone; whether that is trying a new WAA or signing up for a club that interests us, or maybe finally feeling like you’re settling in your year group, with that sense of community. This half term is also maybe one the hardest in the school year. We all know Cornish weather can be unpredictable, but during January and February, it can sometimes feel as though the sun does not exist! Despite this, we remember that this is only temporary, and we stand on the cusp of spring, a time of new growth and colour.

This represents that we all have so much potential for growth, and it is never too late to work on those things we find difficult. Even as I am writing, I hope this sentiment encourages me to make a fresh start on my trigonometry revision! Yet spring has already arrived at Truro School. We are sure you’ve noticed the abundance of blooming flowers that decorate our school, which are thanks to the wonderful gardeners and estates staff that help make our school the vibrant place it is. Whenever we see these flowers, we remind ourselves as we head into the half term, of the possibilities that each of us has for growth and making a fresh start.

We would also like to share some of our own personal highlights of the term so far, to reflect and celebrate the great start to 2025. Amongst a regional netball competition, a performing arts trip to London and of course our lovely trial exams, we have had a busy beginning.

As of this term, we’ve introduced another weekly Senior Prefect meeting, and we have really felt the team growing closer. We are making impressive progress with the ideas and issues we’ve been discussing. This includes input into a whole school review of pupil voice and how the Pupil Council can work even better for all age groups.

Rehearsals for the Frank Moon jazz arrangement of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night have begun, with Truro School’s own band Silver Sax accompanying. We’ve had two action-packed charity concerts, with a range of acts from singing to comedy, to a flute cover from Disney’s “Frozen”, and it was a great success in supporting Young People Cornwall, who spoke powerfully about the work they do at the concert too.

In Sixth Form, we are lucky to have regular speakers from all different walks of life – and this term, photojournalist Rick Findler gave an engaging and insightful talk about his time spent in conflict zones and more recently, his experience following the rallies in America leading up to the elections.

This half term has been packed full, and we are all looking forward to next week!

We wish everyone a fun and relaxing holiday.

Elowyn, Finlay, Megan and Pax

Updates to Terms and Conditions

The school has updated its terms and conditions of service and the new contract can be found at https://www.truroschool.com/parents/policies/

This is a standard regular update that is based on the ISBA template document and clarifies some of the clauses and approaches. The key changes in this update include:

  • Clarification about the treatment of deposits;
  • Clarification of the approach to withdrawing your acceptance before joining the school;
  • Clarity about the payment of VAT, i.e. moving from the general clauses to ones with greater clarity following the introduction in January 2025;
  • Updating the names of some of our policies in the contract;
  • Providing more clarity about the approach if your child needs urgent medical attention;
  • More information about the approach to progress and needs at School;
  • More detail about co-operation and assistance with the school;
  • Clarifying the contact requirements for a ‘responsible adult’;
  • General clause numbering and ease of reading amendments.

We are providing this update to ensure you have a term’s notice ahead of the new contract taking full effect in September 2025.

If you have any questions about the contract, please contact us through enquiries@truroschool.com.

Cashless Payments & Yonder – Reminder

This is a polite reminder that our Café and Tuck Shop operate on a cashless basis. With the introduction of Yonder pouches, 1st – 5th Year pupils no longer have access to their phones during the school day, which will affect their ability to use mobile payment apps.

If you would like your child to be able to make purchases in the Café or Tuck Shop, you may wish to check that they have an alternative payment method (eg bank card) available.

Thank you for your support and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our Head of Enterprises, Joanna Wood, JLW@truroschool.com

Useful Information

We would like to remind you that the Parent section of the Truro School website https://www.truroschool.com/parents/ contains a great deal of information. This includes the whole school calendar, parent handbooks, policies, inspection reports and details on staff, governors, transport, medical and catering arrangements.

Full contact details for the School and Chair of Governors are also listed at https://www.truroschool.com/contact-us/

New Pedestrian Routes in School

A reminder that due to the increased amount of work and the number of large vehicles around the building site, we will be restricting pedestrian access on Trennick Lane. There is therefore no walking on Trennick Lane between the 5th Year Common Room and the top of the rugby changing rooms in both directions.

The only exception will be during a fire alarm activation.

We appreciate your help and cooperation with this.
