14.03.25 Senior Bulletin

Dear Parents, Guardians & Carers,

As we progress through the term, I want to take a moment to celebrate the voices of our pupils and the impact they continue to have on our school community. Pupil voice is central to shaping school life, and through platforms like our School Council, our pupils are demonstrating confidence, courage, and compassion as they work towards meaningful change.

Our School Council has been working diligently to represent the views of their peers and drive positive improvements. Their creativity and curiosity in exploring solutions reflect their commitment to making our school an even better place for all. It is inspiring to see our pupils take ownership of their environment and work collaboratively to make a difference.

This week, Rev. Helen led a reflective Chapel assembly on the meaning of Lent, encouraging us all to consider how acts of kindness and self-reflection can have a lasting impact. Lent is important for pupils in schools as it begins on Ash Wednesday, lasting for 40 days and ending on Holy Saturday. Lent refers to the lengthening of the days of Spring and teaches pupils about self-discipline, reflection, and compassion, while preparing for Easter. The service was enriched by a performance from our school rock band and pupil vocalists, all year groups gave a powerful rendition of Living on a Prayer by Bon Jovi. Their confidence and passion brought the school together in a moment of shared joy and reflection.

Our Lower Sixth pupils are continuing with their ACHE (Advice, Care, Health and Empathy) mentor training to allow them to support pupils across the school. They are dedicated to helping all our pupils thrive by supporting them with advice and guidance. They are our leaders of the future, and they make us all proud.

With so much enthusiasm from our pupils, we look forward to the opportunities ahead, whether through leadership initiatives, creative performances, or acts of service, our pupils continue to demonstrate the values that define our school.

Thank you for your ongoing support in encouraging their growth and engagement.

Mrs Zoe Jobling

Deputy Head (Co-Curricular)

Attendance

Strong attendance at school is important for pupil wellbeing, attainment and wider life chances. We recognise the impact of lost learning time due to absence from school and the challenges and pressures young people face in catching up on work missed due to absence from school.

At Truro School we consistently aim for 100% attendance and support children and their families to work towards this.  In incidences where there are concerns about attendance, our tutors and Heads of Year will work closely with you and your child to help remove barriers to attendance. Our attendance policy can be found on our Policy page.

I am delighted to introduce Sarah Harvey into the role of Pastoral Support Worker.  Sarah arrives to us with experience in working with young people in a pastoral role in schools and she is excited to be joining Truro School. Sarah will be working closely with the Mr Hooper, Senior Pastoral Lead and our Heads of Year to support the pastoral care of our young people.

Parents On-Site During the School Day

A polite reminder that parents should not be on-site during the school day (8.45am – 3.50pm) unless under the following circumstances:

You have a scheduled appointment with a member of staff.

You are spectating at a school sports fixture. In this case, you must sign in and out at the SBA Sports Centre Reception.

You are visiting the Truro School Café during its opening hours (8.00am – 10.30am and 3.00pm – 4.15pm). If visiting the Café, you must sign in and out using the tablet in the Café. Parents and visitors should not be in the Café outside of these hours.

We appreciate your cooperation.

Lockdown Practice

Every School has to have procedures in place to protect pupils and staff from incidents on the school grounds. Most familiar is a fire drill where we manage careful exit from buildings. A different scenario is a Lockdown when we want everyone to get inside a building and next week we will be practicing these procedures. Last term our practice focussed on introducing the concept of Lockdown to pupils who have joined school since the last rehearsal and refreshing those pupils who were here on what action they will need to take in the event of a Lockdown as opposed to actually practicing it. It took place during lesson time so that the majority of pupils and staff were inside buildings. The term’s practice will focus on putting the theory into practice and will take place during a break time when the majority of pupils will be outside or transiting around school.

All pupils will receive advance warning of the practice at the beginning of next week, including how it is going to be notified and what to do. We will be playing pre-recorded messages over the School Bell system, which will make it very clear that it is a test.

The majority of buildings in the school now have access control installed so it is really important that all pupils bring their band to school. If they have lost it they need to go the Front Office to get a new one.

We would like to stress that this is not in response to any threat towards Truro School and we will be making this very clear to all our pupils too. We will have members of staff located around the school to act as observers and they will assist any pupils who are outside when it is activated.

We hope that this awareness is of reassurance to you and your children about the week ahead and the steps the School takes to promote ongoing safety on site. If you have any concerns, please contact your child’s Tutor. Thank you.
