Dear Parents, Guardians & Carers,
Welcome to this exciting Summer term.
It was great to see the children returning this week and sharing their stories of Easter and, I am sure, their aspirations for the term ahead. In front of us all is the Summer term of our year when we have focused particularly on the School value of Creativity. There are sporting fixtures, plays and concerts ahead of us, and the term will culminate in a superb Truro School Festival of Creativity after the many individual journeys the children will take between now and then, including for those taking public examinations. The School and our staff are here for all of the children across those journeys.
I emphasised this in our start of term services at the Truro Methodist Church. Every journey is unique and is valuable. The uniqueness and beauty of each journey is made possible not just by what is intended and got right, but by the unexpected and the mistakes along the way. This is true because we are all human. How we pursue our own versions of excellence, and reach them, whilst also accepting that neither we nor those around us are perfect, is a perennial human challenge.
Reflecting on this to the children, I shared a quote that struck me over Easter from a sports psychologist called Bob Rotella, who was working with Rory McIlroy ahead of his triumph in the Masters Golf. It was a take on the mindset of somebody achieving excellence whilst embracing the inevitability of mistakes, a mindset that sees mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow in confidence from, rather than to feel diminished by. Rotella was talking about golf, of course, but I invited the children to consider how this might apply to school, to relationships with each other or indeed with us, and to life more generally.

He said, “we begin with the idea that golf, by design, is a game of mistakes, and if you love golf, you have to love the mistakes. You have to remind yourself that other players are playing the same game, and they will also all make mistakes. The second part is understanding that you are a human being, and you’re going to make mistakes. Human beings have free will, and that means we get to choose how we think and respond to all the crazy things that happen to us on the golf course and in life.”
I hope that message will help some in our community to take pressure off themselves and to support their peers to do likewise, as they approach the serious and exciting business of the term ahead.
Turning from pupils to parents, carers and guardians, I take this opportunity at the start of term to remind you that the Parent section of the Truro School website contains a great deal of information. This includes the whole school calendar, parent handbooks, policies, and details on staff, governors, transport, medical and catering arrangements. Full contact details are also listed on the Contact page.
I am also pleased to note that on Thursday 1 May, while our 1st and 2nd Year pupils enjoy the ever-popular Silent Disco, the Friends of Truro School (FTS) warmly invite you to join them for a fun and sociable evening of quizzing in the Senior School Dining Hall. Further details can be found here.
I wish you all, and your children, an opportunity filled term ahead.
