Dear Parents & Carers,
As I wrote earlier in the week, it has been a pleasure to welcome your children back to school after the half term break. In addition to enjoying time with their friends, the children have been busy and enthusiastic, both in and out of the classroom. Indeed, their animated approach dovetails perfectly with the Prep theme for the week, that of being optimistic rather than pessimistic (not always the case on the first day back after a holiday!). Monday’s assembly provided an opportunity for us to look at the benefits of optimism and to identify strategies that can help us find an optimistic outlook. These included:
· Setting clear intentions
· Stepping outside of one’s comfort zone
· Reframing a problem into an opportunity
· Avoiding energy sappers
· Carrying oneself like an optimist
· The benefits of exercise
· The importance of humour

As for the Pre-Prep, Wednesday’s assembly allowed us to delve into ‘the power of words.’ We explored songs, jokes, nonsense rhymes, stories and poems before looking at how words can change how we feel. For instance, they can offer comfort or make us feel happy or sad. My challenge to the children was to think about their language, both in relation to how they interact with others and also with regard to how they can make use of it themselves. Should they find themselves at a loose end one evening, weekend or holiday, they might want to create a short story, poem, comic or, as one child recommended, write a book!
Further evidence of the energy and optimism this week has come courtesy of the raft of events and activities that have taken place, and I take this opportunity to congratulate the Truro School Prep Youth Speaks Team, who were victorious in the area final held at Penwith College’s Zennor Theatre.
Other events have included Year 4 visiting Truro Cathedral and Truro Methodist Church, a Year 5 & 6 assembly on the benefits of healthy eating and the Year 5 coast-to-coast cycle ride and visit to King Edward’s mine.
Today alone, witnessed the Under 11 boys competing at the Cornwall county hockey tournament, a nursery swimming session, Ramadan craft club, netball Championships at Penair school and the rearranged cross-country qualifying event at Richard Lander School. And as if that wasn’t enough, Saturday will see the cross-country teams in action at Polwhele House and the Truro School Prep Youth Speaks Team heading to Tavistock for the South-west district finals. I am sure that you will join me in wishing them all the very best of luck.
Looking to next week, and specifically to you as parents, guardians and carers, please may I take this opportunity to inform you that, following feedback from the children and parent community, we have arranged for a sleep specialist to deliver talks to both children and parents. This will take place on Friday, 7th March in the Lovett Hall with the parent session running from 315 to 3:45pm. All are welcome.
Finally, and on a more mundane note, I am pleased to inform you that after some issues with the gas supply earlier in the week, normal service has been restored to the overwhelming majority of the school site. That said, the construction work will remain in place as we look to further improve the system, and I take this opportunity to thank you for your patience, careful driving and understanding.
With every good wish,
Rob Morse
