Dear Parents, Guardians & Carers,
Welcome to the second half of the Spring term, with lighter evenings and a hint of sunshine!
This week the theme of reflection has woven its way through our school. We began the week as a community marking the third anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine. Rev. Helen created a beautiful space in the chapel where pupils and staff lit candles in solidarity and remembrance. For some in our community, this was a deeply personal occasion, and it was lovely to see friends standing by each other and supporting one another in prayer and reflection. It reminded me again of how international our school family is and the importance of compassion, one of our core values that makes our school such a special place.
At our whole school assembly, the Head spoke about the importance of self-reflection and shared the words of the philosopher Socrates, who said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” He encouraged us to consider the importance of self-awareness and critical thinking. As Socrates believed that a life without self-reflection, without questioning our beliefs, actions, and purpose, lacked meaning and value, our school values of curiosity, creativity, and courage encourage us to reflect on why we do what we do and to remain open to growth and new ideas.
And, no matter where we sit in our school community, we were encouraged to use that reflection to channel learning and growth and a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us. We see this built into the classroom every day through the pupils’ learning scores, in particular ‘Response to Feedback’, but we also cover it through staff meetings and professional development, building a growth mindset into the fabric of our school.

Today is the start of Ramadan, a time of fasting and spiritual reflection for Muslims, and next week brings the start of Lent for Christians. We will be encouraging everyone in the school community to support and respect those for whom this is a special and sacred time of year. No matter our personal beliefs, we work hard together to be aware of those around us, and I’m proud to be part of the Truro School family, which is built on the Methodist principle “all are welcome”. Inclusion is such an important thread in our culture, where individuals are learning to be confident to be who they are.
I know the busyness of our weeks sometimes makes reflection difficult. Half-term brought a range of trips for many, skiing in Austria, rugby in Portugal, and the challenge of Ten Tors on Bodmin Moor, to name but a few. Similarly, many of our pupils are busy consolidating their learning and reflecting on their knowledge and any gaps in the build-up to GCSE and A-Level exams. Do reach out to your teachers and form tutors for support where you need it; we are here for you.
Finally, thank you to all of our staff, some in the foreground and many more in the background, who all contribute to our school community. The care, time, and dedication you show to our pupils and each other are what make this school such a vibrant, supportive and friendly place. Thank you.
With best wishes for the weekend.
