28.03.2025 Senior Bulletin

Dear Parents, Guardians & Carers,

I start this bulletin by wishing a happy Mothering Sunday to all who will be celebrating and helping out (!) this weekend. I also wish Eid Mubarak to all who will be celebrating the end of Ramadan too.

As we enter the last week of term, there is much to celebrate from a term full of endeavour. This evening, our annual Sixth Form Sports Dinner takes place to celebrate sporting talent, commitment, camaraderie, and achievement, both in and out of school. It is also an opportunity to thank staff and parents for inspiring, supporting or just endlessly taxiing to make achievements possible. Awards will be given!

For our amazing Sixth Form, this follows off the back of a phenomenal recent EPQ showcase in the Burrell Theatre and our Diploma Graduation Ceremony yesterday. In that ceremony, the wider educational and personal empowerment of our older pupils, beyond their academic studies, was celebrated. I am humbled every year by the potential being realised in this community and however proud we are of our academic outcomes and progress (and rightly so) it is uplifting to celebrate with equal fervour the very many other ways in which children and young adults are and continue to become the very best of themselves at Truro School.

Our Careers Fair, held just last week, further feeds this ambition. The Sports Centre was awash with professionals offering time and advice to engaged children across the middle school as well as Sixth Form. It was the best attended Careers Fair I have seen in my time here. I thank all involved, including the parents who dedicated their time to help inspire our students and show them the vast possibilities for their futures.

For the creative amongst us, this term has been a wonderful showcase. I’ve been truly impressed by the GCSE and A-Level Drama performances, which demonstrated challenge, maturity, and intensity. Additionally, we enjoyed a joyous concert at the Hall for Cornwall. What I see more and more of in our creative life is pupil leadership and engagement, and not just instruction, which I applaud. Our Charity Concert wasn’t just organised by the pupils, it felt truly owned by them. As an audience of adults, we were guests in the children’s space, and that was a privilege.

A special mention must also go to the 1st and 2nd Years. Every 1st Year pupil performed on stage at the Hall for Cornwall during our concert finale, an experience to cherish, even for those new to music. Furthermore, every 2nd Year pupil took part in this week’s awe-inspiring Shakespeare Festival. I don’t know of many schools that expect and support this level of engagement in the creative arts. I am proud of all the staff who make this happen, the parents and grandparents (what a day that was when you visited earlier this term too!) who support it, but most of all, of the children who get stuck in, encourage each other and thrive.

This is why I, my team, and the Governing Body are dedicated to the ongoing strength and ambition of our School, whatever challenges are thrown our way. Today, as this bulletin is shared, we’re having a strategic planning day. We will be reflecting and looking ahead with prudence and confidence, envisaging the strength of our community in 2030, when we will celebrate 150 years of history. We are committed to ensuring that the children and their education remain at the heart of our ambitions. We know this year has been tough, both for you and for us, but we are a school that, with your invaluable support, draws strength from adversity and forges forward.

I wish you all a fine weekend and a super Easter break when it comes.
