29.11.2024 Senior Bulletin

Dear Parents, Guardians & Carers,

As we approach December, we look forward to all that this special month brings. In Chapel this week, Rev Helen introduced Advent: a symbol of hope, peace, joy and love.  She also reminded us of the challenges faced by many around the world and the importance of advocating for those in need. Our December Charity Day (Friday 13 December) and St Petroc’s appeal are just two of the ways our school community can support others during this time.

In this bulletin, I would like to reflect on some key aspects of pupil well-being that are essential for success both in and out of the classroom.

Well-being lies at the heart of everything we do. It is the foundation of a healthy mind and body and plays a critical role in enabling our young people to thrive. One of the most impactful ways we can support our young people is by encouraging them to adopt habits that promote balance and a positive mindset.

Next week, our 5th Years begin their Trial 2 Exams, and tutors will be checking in to offer guidance and support as they navigate the weeks ahead. At home, parents can support by creating a quiet space for study and encouraging regular breaks and healthy sleep routines. Research consistently highlights the importance of good sleep for cognitive function, emotional regulation, and overall health. Small adjustments, like consistent bedtimes, limiting screen time before bed and encouraging calm, relaxing activities, can help to benefit both well-being and learning.

We are pleased to have completed the rollout of Yondr pouches for all 1st to 5th Year pupils. These pouches are designed to help pupils self-regulate their mobile phone use by removing it as a distraction during the school day. This initiative aligns with our commitment to creating a ‘smartphone-free’ environment for 1st to 5th Years, and we’re proud of how positively the pupils have embraced this change.

Recently, I have been inspired by a book gifted to me by our School Counsellor:  Ikigai: The Japanese secret to a long and happy life. This philosophy emphasises finding joy and meaning in daily life by aligning our passions, talents, and contributions to the world. By encouraging our pupils to reflect on their own “ikigai,” we can help them identify what brings them happiness and fulfilment.

Nowhere was this philosophy more evident than in our recent musical, Chicago: a stunning production brimming with talent, dedication and enthusiasm.  Whether it’s a love for music, an interest in science, or the joy of helping others, finding purpose is a journey that begins with small, intentional steps.

At Truro School, we are dedicated to working together as a community to empower our pupils and students with the tools they need to live meaningful, balanced lives, and we are grateful to you for your support in fostering healthy habits and open dialogue at home.

Thank you for your continued partnership in this journey.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Emma Mitchell

Assistant Head (Teaching and Learning)

Head Lice

It has come to our attention that several pupils in the lower school are suffering with head lice which is being treated. However, we need to ask all parents of pupils to check their child’s and siblings’ hair for head lice and eggs and to treat, as necessary.

Please see the link below for advice on how to treat. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/head-lice-and-nits/

Thank you for your cooperation,
From the Medical Team

Works Around Site

You will have noticed that, in addition to the Music Centre works, we have started the installation of the PV panels on the SBA and the Fencing centre as part of the journey to net zero and there is a story about the programme above.

We are grateful to both parents and pupils for their understanding as we manage our operations around the construction compounds and other logistical factors.

Please be assured we are carefully planning the works to minimise any disruption and maintain the high standard of service and learning experiences for our pupils throughout this period.
