A biology experiement designed to test the permeability of cell membranes was on the agenda for our A-Level biology students this week.
Beetroot was chosen for its distinctive betalain pigments, which serves as a good indicator of membrane fluidity. When membrane fluidity increases, these pigments leak out of the cells. By using varying concentrations of alcohol, the students were able to visualise and measure the pigment leakage using a colorimeter. They then analysed their results and documented their experiments, including recommendations for improvement.
This experiment forms one the required practicals for the A-Level biology syllabus.
