Creativity and Learning in Maths

This half term at Truro School Prep, our pupils have been approaching maths with an abundance of creativity, taking part in a range of exciting and challenging mathematical concepts.

Year 6 has begun exploring ratio, learning how to compare quantities and apply this concept to solve problems. They have continued to develop their understanding of algebra, becoming more confident in using variables and solving equations. Some of our Year 6 pupils were then challenged to apply this knowledge to help them solve the NRICH Frog game and respond in any way they saw fit. This created some inspirational and interesting presentations, including a video from the self-titled ‘Maths Boys’, Woody and Sam.

This year group have also deepened their work on fractions and decimals, allowing them to connect these concepts and improve their overall fluency. In addition, some of our Year 6 students participated in the Bonus Round of the Primary Maths Challenge, and we eagerly await the results to see how they fared!

Year 5 has focused on fractions, developing a deep understanding of the relationships between fractions and improving their ability to manipulate them in problem-solving contexts. They have also worked hard to improve their formal written multiplication and division skills, increasing both their fluency and confidence. To wrap up the half term, pupils have begun looking at decimals, laying the groundwork for future topics in this area.

Year 4 has made great strides with formal written multiplication and division, ensuring they can perform these operations with precision. They’ve also explored more informal methods like partitioning, applying their metacognition to decide when it is more efficient to use a formal method or whether mental strategies are the better choice. To deepen their understanding of measures, the year group has also worked on calculating the perimeter of shapes, building their spatial awareness and measurement skills.

Year 3 has been excited to dive into the world of fractions, discovering how to represent and compare parts of a whole. They’ve also spent time exploring measures and learning to convert between different units. Additionally, times tables have been a key focus, with students practising both in lessons and on Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS), helping them build fluency and confidence in this essential area of maths.

It’s been an engaging and productive half term in maths across all year groups, and we are proud of how our pupils have tackled new challenges and strengthened their mathematical skills. Keep up the great work, everyone!
