Cyrus, originally from Hong Kong, has become a familiar face behind the scenes at Truro School, dedicating much of his free time to supporting the technical team in the vibrant Music and Drama Departments. When exploring UK schools with his parents, Cyrus was drawn to Truro School for its unique blend of academic opportunity and outdoor adventure. Their decision was shaped by the school’s strong commitment to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) programme and its stunning location, nestled close to Cornwall’s coastline, offering easy access to water-based and outdoor activities.
He said, “When I started looking into UK schools with my parents and agent, I really didn’t know where to choose, so I looked on Google Maps and saw that Truro School is surrounded by coastline on all three sides, I saw they did a lot of DofE and outdoor activities and felt it would suit me really well.”
Having now completed his Gold DofE, he explained he has found great enjoyment in the upskilling element of the expeditions, as well as the skills, volunteering and the friends he has made through it. But he said the most important lesson he learned early on is the importance of applying blister plasters before embarking on a walking expedition!
Cyrus explained he has aspirations to become a pilot and is currently applying to Australian universities for degree apprenticeships in aviation. He also really enjoys weekend activities with fellow boarders, such as laser tag, ice skating, and visits to the Eden Project.
In addition to serving as a boarding prefect, Cyrus is an active member of the Drama Tech Team and the Music Department. He began by assisting with front-of-house duties and has since taken on a key role in the tech team for numerous events and performances in the bustling 150-seat Burrell Theatre. His carpentry skills, honed through A-Level Design and Technology, have proven invaluable, particularly in set building for the recent Senior Musical production of Chicago.
Throughout his time at Truro School, Cyrus has also been heavily involved in the jazz band and wind band, while regularly playing badminton. He has tried a variety of activities, including surfing, though he admits, “I quickly found out that’s not my thing.” He values the school’s commitment to personal development, especially within the music department, which offers countless opportunities to acquire new skills and grow as an individual.
At a recent assembly, the Sixth Form Team and Head awarded Cyrus the Sixth Form Diploma Award for Personal Growth, recognising his outstanding achievements. Mr Johnson remarked, “Cyrus has shown enormous personal growth and diverse experiences during his time in the Sixth Form, excelling in self-defence training, music participation, leadership roles in school events, serving as Stage Manager for Chicago, completing the Leiths cookery course, and earning his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. He continually pushes himself outside his comfort zone and is an excellent role model within the Truro School Community.”
