After a triumphant evening presenting their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) projects at the Burrell Theatre, EPQ students gathered for a well-earned celebration in the Sixth Form Café. Joined by Mrs Collinge, Mrs Stone, Mrs Thurlow and The Head, the group reflected on their achievements while enjoying some delicious treats.
The EPQ is an independent research project that allows students to explore a topic of their choice, developing valuable skills in critical thinking, project management, and academic writing. The showcase gave students the opportunity to present their findings to friends and family, demonstrating the dedication and effort behind their work.
Reflecting on her EPQ journey, Nia shared, “The best part of the EPQ is having complete control over your project; you get to choose a topic you’re passionate about and shape it in your own way. I’ve learned so much about time management too, especially balancing my EPQ with Leiths and my A-Levels in Geology, Biology, and Psychology. It’s been challenging at times, but the experience has been so rewarding. Now that it’s completed, I feel a real sense of achievement and can fully focus on my A-Levels.”
Kit also encouraged younger pupils to consider the EPQ for Sixth Form, “I would absolutely recommend it to any 5th Year thinking about taking on an EPQ in Sixth Form. It’s an incredibly valuable experience. You develop research, referencing, and time management skills that will be essential at university. It also complements academic subjects really well. Because you get to choose your own topic, you have the freedom to explore something that truly interests you.”
Mr Johnson, Truro School Head, congratulated the students on their presentations and thanked Mrs Collinge, Mrs Stone, and Mrs Thurlow for their support throughout the process. He praised the variety of topics covered and highlighted the unique benefits of the qualification. Many students also noted that their EPQ had contributed to receiving contextual university offers, with many institutions lowering entry requirements based on their predicted EPQ grades.
Congratulations to all involved on a fantastic showcase!
