Lighting Up Year 2

Our Year 2 classes have been learning about Diwali during a special day of celebration. Dressed in their party clothes, the children first learnt some key facts about the Hindu festival that is held over five days in October and November each year.

Diwali is a celebration of good over evil and light over darkness. There are five main aspects of Diwali that the children incorporated into their day:

1. Diwali means ‘rows of lighted lamps’ – so the children made their own Diwali lanterns.
2. Fireworks are set off to chase away evil spirits, so our children made sprinkle-covered bananas to replicate fireworks.
3. These delicious treats were also representative of families coming together for a party with food and sweet treats.
4. Like our children, people dress up in fancy new clothes for Diwali to signal a new start.
5. Finally, our children decorated rangoli designs. The rangoli is representative of happiness, positivity and health and is used to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and good luck.

It was certainly a joyful day for all and a fabulous way to learn about this celebration. Many thanks to our fantastic staff who made the day possible.
