On Friday, members of the Truro School Book Club attended the North Cornwall Book Festival in St Endellion. The trip was a reward for their fantastic commitment to the Truro School reading programme last academic year and also the finalists from the Wyl Menmuir writing competition.
Pupils had the opportunity to participate in inspiring and engaging workshops led by prominent young adult fiction novelists. Among the featured writers was Clare Furniss, Author of ‘The Year of The Rat’, ‘How Not to Disappear’ and ‘The Things We Leave Behind’. Her writing accolades include a nomination as a Radio 2 Book Club pick, shortlisted for the Branford Boase Award, longlisted for the Carnegie Medal, and winning the SCBWI Crystal Kite Award.
Pupils also heard from world-renowned children and young adult author Liz Kessler, whose YA crossover Holocaust novel, ‘When the World was Ours’ was released to immense acclaim in 2021. Her latest work, ‘Code Name Kingfisher’, is a poignant story about two young Jewish sisters set in the Netherlands during World War II.
Finally, Gina Blaxill an established author who specialises in thrillers shared her insights. Her titles include ‘Love You to Death’, ‘You Can Trust Me’, ’Good Enough to Eat’ and ’Saving Silence’.
All pupils received a complimentary book to take home, courtesy of Seasalt and had the opportunity to purchase a variety of titles.
