We are delighted to announce the results of this year’s National Rotary Young Writer Competition. With 163 entries submitted, an impressive 119 came from Truro School Prep.
The judges feedback was wonderful, remarking that all of the Truro School Prep entries in the Junior Section were of a good standard, with entries from pupils Gabriel G, Noah H, Greta S, Evie C and Albie S highly commended.
Congratulations to Rupert R-S and Ethan U, who placed equal 5th and to Matilda S-H, who was 3rd overall.
Special congratulations to Ellie L, who was judged the overall winner! The winning entries at Junior, Intermediate and Senior levels have now been sent for District judging (the whole of Cornwall and Devon). Best of luck to Ellie for this next stage. Her beautiful poem can be read in full below.
Thanks to our amazing staff, who make such a high standard of submissions possible and to Peter Bayly and the Rotary Club of Truro Boscawen for coming to present our pupils with their certificates. Well done to everyone who has taken part.
Wonderful water
Silver streams racing through trees,
Glistening lakes in quarries like jewels,
Shimmering silk lapping like braids.
Water holds secrets, water brings life,
With memories meandering downstream.
The song of the sea is calling me.
A drop of this nostalgic liquid touches hearts,
Breathe in the smell of homecoming ships,
Shaggy seadogs and harbours with fish.
The peaceful feeling of your body immersed in a hot spring,
Connecting times gone by and building our better future.
The song of the sea is calling me.
Icy oceans, foggy seas with beasts lurking inside,
Murky, inky, sunken depths storing treasures of golden jewels,
Green, slimy, leather strands sit on rough seabeds.
Ruby sunsets, with emerald glows rest in twighlight skies,
Pastel yellow, hints of sunset peak through the clouds,
As animals relentlessly circle their land.
The song of the sea is calling me.
Wonderful water, flowing bright,
A silver thread in morning light.
You glide through earth, so soft, so free,
A timeless dance, a mystery.
You rise in clouds, then kiss the ground,
In rivers deep, your whispers sound.
You carve through stone, you fill the seas,
You breathe through leaves; you hum through trees.
The song of the sea is calling me.
Water is a confusing riddle, too much can flood us,
Too little and we’re parched!
This precious gift is running out,
Save our seas, and our trees.
This is our world we need to please,
For without you, what would remain?
A world of drought, a world of pain.
So let us guard with care and grace,
Our wonderful water, Earth’s embrace.
The song of the sea is calling me
Oh, wondrous water, source of peace,
In your embrace, all worries cease.
From morning dew to ocean’s roar,
You carry dreams from shore to shore.
You shape the earth, you carve the land,
In every drop, you take a stand.
A gift of life, so pure, so bright,
Wonderful water, endless light.
The song of the sea is calling me.
