We have been delighted to have taken part in a wide array of sporting activities over the last few weeks including travelling to Millfield School and hosting local schools for games here at Truro School Prep.
Last week, some of the Year 4 girls travelled to Polwhele House for a friendly netball match, the first away game of the season for them. The girls started the game tentatively and took a while to find their rhythm when passing into space. However, they showed great determination and never gave up, bringing much more energy and commitment to the third and fourth quarters. They began moving into space and signalling for the ball, enabling them to maintain possession and control the game. The team showed great promise for the future with their performance.
Sixteen pupils from Years 5 and 6 travelled to Millfield to compete in the qualifier round of the IAPS swimming event. This is one of the most prestigious rounds to attend as the event is attended by two of the strongest teams, Millfield School and Mount Kelly. There were a total of twenty prep schools in attendance.
We will receive the event results and national results in due course, but regardless of the outcomes, our swimmers have much to be proud of. For some, it is the first time that they have competed in such a strictly-run gala; the rules can be hard to remember alongside the desire not to let the school or fellow pupils down.
Hennie and Ollie both lost goggles on their dives but continued to swim the whole race with determination. George was unsure about diving for fear that his goggles would also come off but bravely committed to a dive start and swum with a tangible determination that saw George win his heat.
Truro also placed first in their heats for the Year 5 girls’ breaststroke and Year 6 girls’ front crawl race, with Evie and Pheobe swimming with conviction and commitment.
Our backstrokers, Miles and Lissie executed very effective and skilled starts to their races. Coach Julia Raines was very proud to see all our butterfly swimmers complete their swims and rise to the challenge of this tricky stroke. Well done Ollie, Poppy, Hennie and Woody.
Rohan, Dylan, Audrey, Fjola, Harry and Ellie all had some stiff competition but pushed themselves to deliver their best performances.
And finally, a well done and ‘thank you’ to our Truro School Prep boys who rose to the request for an ‘interview’ over the microphone. We were left wondering if they were aware that the gentleman interviewing them was an Olympic medalist from the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Our footballers have also had plenty of action on the pitch this week. On Monday, our Year 3 and 4 teams were in action against a very strong Archbishop Benson side. Despite not getting the results they hoped for, our pupils showed great determination and stamina, picking up their pace and defensive play as the games progressed.
Pupils from Years 5 and 6 travelled up to Plymouth on Wednesday to play against three teams from Plymouth College. Truro Prep A drew 2-2 in an end-to-end contest which Truro led for the majority of the game. Although the pitch was not ideal for fans of the beautiful game, Truro Prep A played some wonderful passing football, and their goals showed the quality the team are capable of. Lots to learn from and build on!
Both other teams from Truro thoroughly enjoyed the away-day experience with goals aplenty and some commendable effort and sportsmanship for all concerned.
On Wednesday 12th February, Truro Prep hosted Truro High in a highly entertaining football match. Truro Prep made changes throughout the match to ensure it was an even contest, eventually prevailing as winners over our visitors 2-1. The girls played with great enthusiasm and team spirit and were fantastically sporting to our visitors throughout the afternoon.
In netball, our U11 team had a close match with Plymouth College, with some great attacking and defending play. Players of the match (chosen by their opposition) were Amaya (GD) for her interceptions and close marking in defence, and Bo (C) for her speed of movement into space.
Our players had a positive learning experience, counting each quarter as separate games and using their metacognitive skills to develop their tactical awareness. Well done to all of the squad, Bo, Amaya, Emmeline, Eleanor, Rozalia, Matilda, Harlow and Emmie.
Our Year 3 and 4 netball teams were also in action, taking part in the ‘Stinger’ version of Bee Netball against Polwhele House School. The ‘Stinger’ version involves teams of five players, rotating positions during the game, with various rules to simplify the game and maximise ball contact time.
With our pupils split into three teams, it was a great way to ensure that all children had an equal opportunity to gain experience in competitive sports. A reminder for any pupils who are interested in playing more netball that they are welcome to join Junior Netball on Tuesday after school.
