Prep Sports Round Up

It has been another super few weeks for Sport at Truro School Prep. Last week, the U11 girls’ netball team travelled to Penair to take part in their first netball tournament of the year. There were eight schools in attendance and it was a day full of opportunities to develop and learn, to grow as players and gain lots of experience on court. The girls worked brilliantly together and were quick to turn over possession and create attacking opportunities from their defensive zone.

Emmeline and Amaya were defensive superstars, rebounding the ball and regaining control of the game, which allowed our attacking players to move into space and bring the ball up the court. At the end of the day, Truro School Prep won 4, drew 2 and lost just 1 game with a total of 34 goals scored and just 12 conceded. It was a great start to an exciting season for our U11 team; well done girls.

In rugby this week, a team of Year 4 pupils made the trip across to Polwhele for a great afternoon of TAG rugby. The players developed in their play as the matches progressed, with fantastic handling and running skills, matched only by the players’ terrific attitudes. The fixture was a great advert for all the benefits that competitive sport brings.

On Wednesday, Truro Prep played host to Mount Kelly for U11 and U10 rugby matches. The games were played in fantastic spirit, with the U11 being particularly competitive against a well-matched and skilful Mount Kelly team. The teams showed some fantastic handling and a growing understanding of the physical aspect of the game. As with all fixtures at this age group rugby was the winner, with no scores being kept during the games.

In hockey this week, our Year 4 and 5 girls took on Truro High School to experience competitive hockey within coached games. Our Year 4 Green Team (Elodie, Malhar, Erin, Seren, Daisy, Athena and Niah) made pleasing progress with their decision-making within both of their two games. It was great to see them getting free and moving into space to receive the ball. The children gradually started to develop their game understanding by learning to switch from attacking skills to defending skills, depending on which team had the ball. Seren was chosen as player of the match by the opposition for her determination and confidence on the pitch.

Our Blue Team (Greta, Poppy, Isabella, Harleen, Mabel, Coco, Ella C, and Ella D) worked extremely hard to move or pass the ball into space. Coco and Isabella created several opportunities by moving forward to meet the ball. Mabel was chosen as the player of the match for her defending skills and movement on the pitch. The children all increased their understanding of the rules during the afternoon.

Our Year 5 girls were also in action, with our Red Team (Fjola, Audrey, Emily, Endelyn, Hennie, Freya and Sienna) working hard on their teamwork and positional awareness. It was brilliant to see the difference in the standard of play, particularly the improved quality of their passing when our players got free and moved into space. Well done to Hennie, who was chosen as the player of the match by the opposition for her movement of the ball into space.

Our Year 5 Blue Team (Emily, Connie, Thea, Alexia, Violet, Saffron, Sofia and Maya) showed great promise in what was, for some, their first experience playing in a competitive hockey match. The girls worked hard together to develop their attacking and defending skills. Well done to Alexia and Maya, who were chosen by their opposition as players of the match for their determination during the game.

It was fantastic to hear that these experiences of playing hockey have inspired several more children to join us at the after-school hockey club on Fridays, which takes place on the all-weather pitch at the Senior School.
