Prep Sports Round Up 21.03.25

As another week draws to a close, we are delighted to share with you more tales of courage, camaraderie and sporting success, this week, from our phenomenal Prep hockey teams.

All wrapped up and expecting a cold day, the under 11 girls team spent last Friday competing in the county tournament at Penzance. The girls didn’t stay cold for very long, setting a blistering pace in the first game and maintaining it for the whole competition.

They played a lovely style of hockey passing the ball from the back to the front with real pace. The squad achieved the unheard of stats of not conceding a goal all day and deservedly walked away as County Champions! Congratulations!

On Monday 17th March, we took our U11 boys’ hockey team, fresh from their win at the County tournament, to Millfield School for the U11 West hockey finals. With the top two schools from each of the different counties in the southwest region attending, we expected a high standard of play. As usual, there were no easy games, but our team rose to the challenge brilliantly and played consistently well in their group games.

Their opposition included Millfield Prep and Salisbury Cathedral Schools, who qualified as group winners and runners up, progressing to the next stages of the tournament. Our team played well under pressure, defending consistently well and scoring goals against Sherborne Prep, The Elms and Westonbirt Schools.

Thank you to all our parents who braved the early start and supported our team throughout this bitterly cold tournament.

‘I am very proud of how hard our team worked, never giving up and bringing their best in every game.’ Woody

‘Our team tried hard, no matter what.’ Rory

‘Even though we didn’t score many goals, we did successfully manage to keep the opposition out of the shooting circle.’ Tristan

On the back of the regional tournament on Monday, the Year 6 squad were in action again this week in a friendly match against Mount Kelly’s strong Year 5 team. The age difference allowed us to experiment with positions and gave Rory a runout in goal.

The boys played well, spreading the ball out wide and attacking at pace. There was some great link-up play that resulted in good team goals being put in at the back post, one of our pre-match targets.

Well done to our U11 squad: Reggie, Rory, Arthur, Dylan, William, Toby, Will V, Woody, George, and Digby.

Also in action were our U10/U9 squad, many of whom were playing in their very first hockey match. Players of the match were Henry (for his strong defending skills) and James (for his speed and shots on goal in attack). Our players developed their tactical awareness during the afternoon, starting to use the width of the pitch and spacing out into their playing positions. There were several goals, leading to a win at final time.

Well done to our U10/U9 squad: Henry Chr, Henry, Theo, Harvey, Jack, Zander, James, Christopher, and Freddie.
