Field trips form a such an important part of learning for our GCSE and A-Level Geology pupils. Our Upper Sixth Geology class enjoyed a three-day field trip to Somerset where they explored the geology of the Mendips. Their visit included a fascinating trip to the Somerset Earth Science Centre and two local quarries. A local expert explained the area’s geology, and discussed the environmental impact of quarrying limestone, and its uses.
The Quarry Manager at Moonhill explained the challenges of quarrying andesite and the role geologists play in the process. The group also visited Whatley Limestone Quarry to learn about blasting techniques, rock crushing, and how they carry out environmental impact mitigation.
On the second day, the group honed their field skills by sketching the Blue Anchor Fault and the rocks at Kilve. After crossing the River Tamar back into Cornwall they stopped off at Bude, to map the anticlines and fold structures that pepper the coastline. Despite the torrential rain, the group produced excellent work and their final stop at the iconic Millook Haven rounded off a very successful visit.
