A huge thank you to Dr Rob Chapman, Senior Lecturer at Leeds University and specialist in gold mineralogy and exploration, for joining our geology department yesterday.
Dr Chapman delivered a talk on careers in geology to interested pupils and students from the 4th Year to Upper Sixth. His talk also focussed on the important role of geologists in the UN sustainability goals. During his time here, he also met with our Upper Sixth geologists to discuss the options of studying geology at university. We currently have ten students planning to study geology, and it was an excellent opportunity for them to ask specific questions.
In the afternoon, Dr Chapman took a teaching session with our Lower Sixth geologists. The session focused on the identification of minerals and the plate tectonic setting in which they formed. The students observed and interpreted the university specimens, one of which included a small bottle of gold.
Thank you, Dr Chapman, and thank you to our Head of Geology, Miss Hope, for this inspiring day.
