Under 11 South-West Rugby Festival

Two hundred young rugby players and over a hundred spectators took to the field in the winter sunshine for the Under 11 South-West Rugby Festival held at Truro School Prep on Wednesday 20th November 2024. It was a rousing demonstration of courage, determination, athleticism and excellent sportsmanship.

The festival has always been about player development and building a love for rugby. Some participants will go on to play as Truro School Alumni at a high standard. Exeter Chief’s Will Becconsall (CO21) and England U18s George Newman (CO25) both featured when our annual festival was in its infancy; Will as a referee and George as a player.

With Mr Morse refereeing the 1st Team for this year’s event, he was on hand to witness some excellent rugby. The Truro School Prep 1st Team worked hard in contact areas and moved the ball well when in possession. Some spectacular tries were scored and thundering tackles took place but, that said, the most pleasing aspect of their play was their collaboration and willingness to work for each other.

The 1st team gained in confidence as the afternoon wore on and all should be pleased with their contributions and performances. Looking to the future, the players appreciate that there is room for improvement in terms of maintaining depth when attacking, and in-line speed and defensive alignment when working to regain possession. Mr Morse was left with no doubt that they will target these areas during their next training session.

In matches against Truro High School, St Hilary, Exeter School, Plymouth College and Mount Kelly the 1st team scored 18 tries and conceded just 2.

Well done and thanks to all of our Truro School Prep players who worked hard and showed great enthusiasm and camaraderie.  Thanks to those who spectated and officiated throughout the afternoon, particularly Mr Lord for organising a splendid event and to referees Mr Morse and Mr Ward.
