In today’s whole school assembly, our Head Prefect team shared numerous individual achievements in academics, sports, and personal success from across the school.
Mr. Johnson then spoke about two significant historical figures; Walter Tull, a soldier in World War I, and Joseph Emidy, a composer and founder of the Truro Philharmonic Orchestra. He then posed a thought provoking question: when we think of these individuals, do we envisage them with white skin or black?
As we begin Black History Month, and in light of Floyd Steadman’s inspiring talk last week we will continue to explore the topic of unconscious bias. During form time, pupils are working on exercises designed to raise awareness of their own unconscious bias and identify steps we can all take to increase our awareness of this.
Congratulations to all our Values Award Winners from across the school, as well as to everyone who has made a significant contribution to our school community this week.
1st Year | Jenny | For showing compassion to nature and courage in helping escort a rather large spider to safety!
2nd Year | Matipa | For his courage and compassion in approaching all aspects of school life alongside his peers.
3rd Year | Lois | For demonstrating courage to confidently work hard in academic, music and sport from the outset of the 3rd year.
4th Year | Martha | For her spectacular contribution to Truro School since joining us last year. She is willing to participate in many areas of the school, and always does it with a smile.
5th Year | Tom | For taking down chairs from tables in the morning without being asked. It seems a small thing, but it makes a difference and is symptomatic of his thoughtfulness.
L6 | Ed | For representing his side, Mousehole FC, talking live on BBC Radio Cornwall and taking part in an awards ceremony in London where Ed has been nominated for his role as part of Mousehole’s media team.
U6 | Bea | For her compassionate support of a 1st Year student who was lost. |
