The Sixth Form debating teams drew on their wits and their wisdom this week to compete in two full online debates with the Oxford Schools’ Debating Competition. They were drawn against over 60 other school teams from across the South West and Wales.
Motions and positions (whether proposing or opposing, opening or closing the debate) were given out just 10 minutes before each round began. With Round One ‘This house would require religious leaders to remain politically neutral. ‘ and Round Two: This house believes that the saying ‘Money does not bring happiness’ has done more harm than good.
Although they did not break through to the finals in Oxford, they performed brilliantly, putting into practice all of their training from the Thursday lunchtime debating club. There were some heated exchanges, and a lot of laughter. Our debaters are now looking forward to setting up the House Debating competition for the Summer Term.
Our teams were: Sophie and Oriana, Bea and Charlie, Vlad and Izzy and Harry and Isaac. Well done to all.
