Year 5 Explore the Moor

Year 5 have been studying myths and legends in their English lessons this half-term, so it was incredible for them to bring this learning to life with a visit to the Cheesewring on Bodmin Moor. This granite tor, located near the village of Minions on the eastern flank of Bodmin Moor, is said to be the result of a contest between a giant called Uther and Saint Tue. It was given the curious name as it is said to resemble the piled slabs of a stack of “cheeses” in a traditional cider press.

Geologists would argue that the curious structure is the result of weathering and erosion and, in biting winds, our pupils deemed that theory to be very likely!

During their visit, our intrepid walkers first climbed Stowe’s Hill to take in the beautiful 360-degree views of Brown Willy and Rough Tor in the distance, before passing the Cheesewring, visiting Daniel Gumb’s house and eating lunch at Goldiggins Quarry, a truly breathtaking spot. Wildlife highlights included a large flock of sheep escaping from their field over crumbling stone walls, groups of roaming ponies and belted Galloway cattle.

Our courageous pupils finished their walk with a visit to the ‘Pipers’ and ‘Hurlers’, ancient slabs of standing stone with yet more legends and stories to tell. According to folklore, they represent musicians who were turned to stone for playing music while dancers celebrated on a holy day.

Truro School is fortunate to be located in Cornwall and excursions like this give our pupils unrivalled opportunities to make the most of this stunning county and its rich heritage. A huge thanks to our incredible staff who make these trips possible and to all of our students who showed incredible determination and engagement throughout the day.
